If you love me

John 14:15 (KJV) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Many people use this verse as a means of laying burdens on people – you know, thou shalt do this and thou shalt do that and if you don’t, you’re not saved. That is definitely not what this verse teaches. What it really is saying is if you love Jesus like we are supposed to love him, we will keep his commandments – even if we don’t know all his commandments. If we love him like we should, we will seek out his commandments and what pleases him and do those things. For example, I love my wife very much. I try to do those things that please her. She never wrote down a list of commandments for me to keep to prove that I love her – I know that if I love her like I am supposed to love her, I’ll be doing the things that please her. If I love her, I won’t commit adultery with another woman. I’m sure if my wife were to write a list of commandments for me to keep to prove I love her, not cheating on her would be on that list. But since I love her like I should, I don’t even need her to write that list because I’m already doing those things that prove my love for her. And on those rare occasions when I can tell she is not happy, I try to find out why she is not happy so I can alter my behaviour to bring it back in line with what pleases her.

If we love the Lord Jesus Christ as we are supposed to love him, we will do those things that please him without having to be told. And when we know he is not happy, we will seek out what is needed to correct our way so we will keep him happy.
