What is a liar? Some may say that there is a difference between someone who tells a lie and someone who is a liar. How many lies or how often must one lie to cross over from being someone who tells a lie and someone who is a liar? How many people must one murder before one is called a murderer? Isn’t it just one? How many children must one molest before one is called a child molester? Isn’t it just one? So why shouldn’t someone who tells just one lie be called a liar? Isn’t it because we all have told lies but we don’t want to think of ourselves as a liar? We all know murder and child molestation are serious crimes, but we don’t think telling lies are all that serious. But lies are abomination to God:
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue… Proverbs 6:16-17a
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. Proverbs 12:22
If God thinks the sin of lying is serious, so should we. Whether we define a liar as someone who lies repeatedly or as someone who lies just once, we all are liars. After all, who among us has only told one lie? No one? That’s what I thought.
