Working your way to Heaven

After Adam sinned, God cursed the ground.

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Genesis 3:17

When Cain and Abel offered sacrifices, Cain offered fruit of the ground – the result of his labor with that which was cursed.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. Genesis 4:3

God was not satisfied with Cain’s offering.

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. Genesis 4:5

Many people believe they need to be a good person – they need to keep the law – to go to Heaven. However, just as there was a curse with the ground, there is a curse with the law.

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Galatians 3:10

You cannot keep the law to go to Heaven. You are trying to offer to God the result of your labor with that which is cursed. You need something else to offer to God. God was pleased with Abel’s offering – a blood sacrifice. You need to offer a blood sacrifice to please God. Thankfully, God has provided that blood sacrifice for you.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Galatians 3:13

God’s justice was satisfied when he saw the travail of the Lord Jesus Christ’s soul. He is not satisfied with your works. Trust in Christ alone.
