Did Jesus suffocate on the cross?

Most descriptions of crucifixions explain that the cause of death is suffocation. This is due to the position in which the person was crucified. After a period of hanging on the cross, the person would be weakened to the point where he would be unable to pull himself up to breathe and would thus suffocate. Did Jesus actually suffocate to death on the cross?

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Matthew 27:46

Jesus said this after hanging for at least three hours on the cross. It was also after he had been beaten and scourged. Notice that it says he cried with a loud voice. Someone who was weakened to the point of suffocation would be unable to cry with a loud voice.

Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. Matthew 27:50

Notice again, it says he cried with a loud voice and then gave up the ghost. It doesn’t say he cried with a loud voice and then gasped for air before dying. He still had strength enough to cry with a loud voice and then he deliberately gave up the ghost. He deliberately died. So what’s the point? Jesus has complete power over life and death. He willingly gave up his life. No one took it from him. If he does not have power over life and death, he would be unable to save you and me.

Praise God that death has no power over him!

One Response to “Did Jesus suffocate on the cross?”

  1. Good observation, I just considered this because I was listening to Imagine It by The Rep. Generally people suffocate on the cross, but not our Lord. To know that he submitted to the Father’s will in literally giving up His life. It’s not passive giving up, it’s an active giving up of His life even at the very end. Praise the Lord.
