Seeker-sensitive churches preach a message that God has a wonderful plan for your life. These churches try to attract people with a happiness gospel or a prosperity gospel. They say “Give Jesus a try, your life will be better.” This is a false gospel. Consider these bible passages:
2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
John 15:18-21 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
Does that sound like a wonderful plan? Consider also what happened to Stephen:
Acts 7:54-59 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, 58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
They gnashed on him with their teeth and stoned him to death. I don’t consider that a wonderful plan, do you?
Look at the many times Paul was beaten, stoned, left for dead, imprisoned, shipwrecked, and persecuted. A wonderful plan? If you consider that to be wonderful, please don’t offer to do me any favors – I’m not sure I want what you consider to be wonderful.
The right message is not that of a wonderful plan for your life, but rather a wonderful end after your life ends. Remember in the parable of the sower there was seed that was sown on stony ground. This is likened to those who gladly receive the word but endure for a short time until persecution arises. In other words, they heard a message that made them happy, but the message was not the one that brings about a new life which can endure persecution. Becuase they were given the happiness gospel or the prosperity gospel, as soon as times came that were not happy and were not prosperous, they did not remain. A true convert will endure persecution and remain.
Seeker-sensitive churches that preach the happiness gospel may be growing rapidly, but see if they stand the test of time – see how many people stay there for 5 years, 10 years, 20 years. See how many people stay with those churches during rough times. See how many people stay with those churches and raise up their children and grandchildren in the same church. Their message has no power to overcome the world. The true gospel preaches we are sinners that deserve to be condemned to Hell, but God sent his son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die on the cross as payment for our sins, and to be buried and rise from the dead. That is the only wonderful plan.
