Jesus our Refuge

Hebrews 6:17-18 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

Jesus is our refuge. To understand what it means to flee for refuge we must go back to the Old Testament. In Numbers 35, we see the cities of refuge established by God.

Numbers 35:26-28 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled; 27 And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood: 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

If a man killed another man, he could flee to the city of refuge and be safe from the avenger – from the penalty of death. As long as that man remained in the city of refuge, the avenger could not enter in to execute judgment. If the man was found outside the city of refuge, the avenger could bring judgment and death on the man and the avenger would be free from the blood of the man.

We all are guilty and the avenger is looking to slay us. If we do not flee to the city of refuge, we will be caught and we will perish. If we do not flee to the Lord Jesus Christ and we are not found in him having his righteousness, we will be caught by the avenger and we will perish.

Are you in Christ Jesus? Are you safe in the city of refuge?
