How white is that sheep?

Look at a white sheep in a green, grassy field. The sheep looks really white. Now take that same sheep and put it in a field of fresh snow. It doesn’t look so white anymore, does it? How we perceive an object varies greatly by the thing to which we compare it.

In Proverbs, we are told that most men will proclaim their own goodness. Most people think they are pretty good – especially when we compare ourselves to people like Adolf Hitler, John Gacy, Ted Bundy, etc. The danger in that though is we get a false sense of security. It is self-righteousness and pride. We should not be comparing ourselves to others. Jesus said unless our righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisees, we will not enter Heaven. The Pharisees were outwardly very righteous. They kept the law down to the tiniest detail. The Pharisees would say they were good because they are not as bad as us. We are the Pharisees’ Adolf Hitler, John Gacy, Ted Bundy, etc.

We need not compare ourselves to others – we need to see how we measure up against the Lord Jesus Christ. We will then see how far we have fallen and how great our need is for a saviour. We need to be found in him, not having our own righteousness, but the righteousness which is of faith in Jesus Christ.
