Intermittent Explosive Disorder – another new name for old sins

Monday, June 5th, 2006 at 6:07 pm

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED)- that’s the new name for road rage or losing your temper. No longer does a person excuse his or her bad behavior by saying “the devil made me do it.” If you believe that, it would imply you believe in God, but that is not acceptable anymore. Now, it is “my genes made me do it.”

The Bible gives us another explanation for road rage: pride.

Only by pride cometh contention. Proverbs 13:10a

I am not a Bible literalist

Before you think I’ve gone off the deep end, read the entire post. You will understand what I am saying if you read the entire post.

Do you actually take the Bible literally? You may think you do, but you don’t really. Consider this passage:

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:26

Do you take that literally? To be a disciple of Christ, do you literally have to hate your parents? That would contradict the Lord’s command to love your neighbor as yourself. There are many other similar passages where you do not take them literally (Jesus is not a literal door, he is not literal bread, etc.). So if we don’t really take the Bible literally, how should we take it? Plainly:

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. 9 They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge. Proverbs 8:8-9

Notice God says his words are “plain.” We are to take the Bible plainly. What does that mean? It means you get the sense of the passage from the context. If it is a literal statement, you can discern that from the context. If it is figurative or allegorical, you can discern that from the context. We must understand any passage by the context in which it appears.

Don’t take the Bible literally; take it plainly.
