God made the earth out of nothing and you have to become nothing if you want him to make something out of you.

Friendly, Singing Man

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005 at 4:21 pm

2 Timothy 2:14-18 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

Here we read about Hymenaeus (which means singing man) and Philetus (which means friendly man). These singing, friendly men overthrew the faith of some. Certainly, not all singing, friendly men are like these two; nevertheless, it is no coincidence that these two men were mentioned by name. How did these two overthrow the faith of some? With words that “eat as doth a canker.” Have you ever had a canker sore? It starts out small and unnoticeable and then grows and grows until it becomes painful. These singing, friendly men began by saying something little here and something little there – nothing outright blasphemous or injurious. These men wanted to be subtle (like Satan) and to work their way into people’s trust. And then before long and before they could be stopped, just like a canker, their words caused pain for some – causing some to fall – maybe causing some to leave the church.

Do you know any singing, friendly men? If so, take heed that you study the word so that you can rightly divide it and not be led astray by unprofitable words – words that will eventually cause you pain.

Our Anchor

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005 at 1:02 pm

Hebrews 6:17-20 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

An anchor is a device that holds a ship in place – to keep it from drifting away. Waves and currents may come and the ship may drift off a little ways from its original position – but if it drifts too far, that anchor tugs on it and keeps it from drifting too far away.

We, as children of God, have an anchor of the soul. We may drift off a little ways into sin but our anchor holds. God will not let us drift off too far – he will keep us close.

No matter how hard the winds and waves are, our anchor is sure and stedfast. Praise God!
