Weightier Matters

Friday, August 26th, 2005 at 12:18 pm

Matthew 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Jesus rebukes the Pharisees because they are not preaching the law, judgment, mercy, and faith:
law: the commandments
judgment: we face judgment because we violate the law
mercy: God shows us mercy by giving his son to pay the penalty for us
faith: believing that the Lord Jesus Christ endured God’s wrath in our place.

Read what was spoken

Friday, August 26th, 2005 at 12:10 pm

Matthew 22:31 …have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God…

Jesus is addressing the Sadducees in this passage and references a passage from Exodus where God spoke to Moses. Moses recorded the words that proceeded out of the mouth of God – and those words are written and speak unto you.

Patching things up with God

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005 at 9:36 pm

Matthew 9:16-17 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

Patching things up with God doesn’t work. Eventually, the patch won’t hold. The only way to make it last is to make it new – you need to become a new creature to be right with God.

In the midst of a terrible storm

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005 at 9:55 pm

Jonah 1:5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

Even in the midst of a terrible storm, the child of God is still able to sleep peacefully.

God saw their works

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005 at 9:52 pm

Jonah 3:10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

God does look at the heart – but he also looks for fruit. He is looking for our works.
